Bikes Palya is a program for kids and communities in the APY lands. Palya means “great” in Pitjantjatjara. Bikes are Great. There’s something awesome about the thrill and joy kids get riding bikes in the Outback communities of the APY lands. Bikes Palya translates the excitement of cycling into learning opportunities for Aboriginal and isolated youth through programs that reinforce values of pride and responsibility while creating a healthy pastime. In schools where attendance can be very low, Bikes Palya aims to drive attendance rates higher and to engage with typically hard-to-reach youth through the power of the bike.
To encourage and inspire youth into active, healthy and positive lifestyle choices through the popularity of bikes and to provide equipment and facilities to engage and benefit entire communities.
To engage and empower disadvantaged youth and their communities to deliver improved health, education and employment outcomes.
To establish community assets (bikes, tracks, workshops) to improve access to bikes and cycling infrastructure. Promote recreational cycling and active mobility throughout South Australia. Teach individuals and communities about bike mechanics, track building, and maintenance. Provide skills training to establish employment pathways to jobs in cycling industries. Use the high popularity of bikes to support and strengthen existing youth and health services. Contribute to regional development aims by supporting cycle tourism.
Bikes Palya delivers opportunity, motivation, achievement, self-confidence and self-esteem. The team achieves that by delivering a program based around learning, growing, building, co-operating, healthy eating and, of course, riding.
Bike SA is committed to expanding Bikes Palya to include many other regional communities. Currently, Bikes Palya is only partly funded thanks to the support of some incredibly generous partners. However, there is so much more opportunity to build on existing support and grow the program to include many more children. An exciting opportunity exists for corporate partners to align with Bikes Palya to further support the significant outcomes delivered through this effective program. If you would like to align with our mission, please contact us via the dedicated Bikes Palya contact page below.
To increase the scope of the program, Bicycle SA is actively looking for long-term partners who would like to support the program and create healthier and safer communities within regional and remote South Australia.
