Bikes Palya

Improved health and wellbeing amongst young Aboriginal people through bike education and recreation

The Bikes Palya program serves as a vital avenue for fostering healthy and empowering behaviors among Aboriginal youth residing in remote outback communities, where access to recreational and educational opportunities is limited. In the Pitjantjatjara language, 'Palya' translates to 'Good'—Bikes are good!

However, Bikes Palya currently lacks funding for 2024. Your donation or sponsorship can make a meaningful difference in supporting our cause.

Your support and contributions help us engage and empower disadvantaged youth and their communities

Our Objectives

  • Establish community assets (bikes, helmets, tools, and spare parts).
  • Promote cycling as a cost-effective recreational activity, equipping remote outback communities with the necessary skills and expertise to facilitate cycling activities.
  • Provide skill development and training to build capacity, confidence, and self-sufficiency in youth.
  • Build strong relationships with Aboriginal organisations, stakeholders and remote outback community members.
  • Support and strengthen existing youth and health services: by utilising the popularity of bikes.
  • Tailor programs to meet local priorities and needs.
  • Contribute to regional development aims.

Our Outcomes

  • Improved physical and mental health, fostering general well-being among participants.
  • Increased confidence and self-sufficiency, empowering individuals to take control of their lives.
  • Higher school attendance rates, indicating improved engagement and commitment to education.
  • Enhanced community connectivity, fostering a sense of belonging and social cohesion.
  • Heightened road safety awareness, promoting safer behaviours on the roads.
  • Decreased antisocial behaviour, contributing to a more harmonious and supportive community environment.

What communities are saying

“With each program Bikes Palya have delivered I have found them to be successful, flexible, innovative and professional.”

– Sam Adams, Youth Development Officer, Ernabella

‘Bikes Palya helps kids in the community by fixing their bikes. It’s a really great program, enabling kids to learn how to fix and maintain their bikes along the way.’

– Darralee Gibson, Whyalla Youth Centre.

‘My child was able to ride and be a part of the program as Bikes Palya provided a modified bike to support him as he had a disability. He was over the moon to be able to be involved’.

– Parent, Whyalla
