Our courses are booked on a group basis. If you'd like Bike SA to deliver a course to your school, workplace, or community, get in touch with us.
This 3 hour course is designed specifically for those just starting out or who haven’t got the bike out the shed for a long, long time. The Basic Bike Care course aims to give you the additional knowledge you need to get your bike back onto the road or trail with extra confidence.
We provide you with a better understanding of the working parts of your bike which will make the retail experience of purchasing accessories, and even a new bike for those newbies, that little bit easier.
It’s amazing how far a little knowledge goes to help you find the right product at the right price without having to buy it twice.
“I went knowing nothing about bikes and left knowing a whole lot. What a great course to get to know your bike”
You will learn how to clean and lubricate the major mechanical working groups of your bike and get the inside story on puncture repair. Puncture repair is a must know for all cyclists as the “it won’t happen to me, I never get punctures” argument doesn’t really wash when you are 10kms from home either on the trail or the roadside and don’t have the tools or the knowledge to confidently get your steed repaired and rolling again. But don’t worry… in Bicycle SA’s Basic Bike Care course, our expert facilitators will show you how it’s done! It was thoroughly well organized and everyone was extremely helpful, no matter how absurd our questions seem

The Advanced Bike Maintenance course is specifically suited to riders who can confidently undertake the regular tuning and cleaning tasks required to keep their bike running but are seeking an in-depth knowledge of their bike's anatomy, allowing them to remove, repair, adjust and replace each of the major mechanical working groups.
This detailed course has been prepared for participants who have previous maintenance experience. While this structure is ideal for those participants who have undertaken previous instruction in one of Bike SA’s other maintenance courses, this is not mandatory. This course is also excellent for fleet mechanics or resource managers who would like to maintain their fleet in-house rather than rely on a local bike shop.
The Advanced Bike Maintenance program is structured to include content relevant to both road and MTB enthusiasts and covers workshop specifics for both bike designs.
Each of the three 8-hour programming days is separated into 2 intensive 3.5 hour workshop sessions and an hour for lunch plus short morning and afternoon breaks.
Each session combines comprehensive group theory instruction and practical demonstrations including tool identification and orientation as well as “exploded” practical examples of all major mechanical working groups.
In-depth demonstrations are provided, covering each individual component’s removal, repair, maintenance requirements and reassembly/replacement procedures.
An extensive opportunity is then given at your workstation to practise on one of our specific workshop MTBs or road bikes depending on where your passion lies. Once you are confident in your abilities using our equipment, you can then progress to work on your own bike and ask any questions that pertain to your specific bike setup.
We operate this course subject to demand. Contact us to register your interest.
3 day course
Note: Minimum age 16yrs to participate
Minimum of 10 participants per group. Contact us to arrange a booking for your workplace, community or school.
Our class size is limited to 8-10 participants. An experienced instructor works with small groups in Bicycle SA’s dedicated maintenance workshop. Alternatively, we can come to you at your school, community or business.
We have equipped each workstation with a full selection workshop quality tools, professional lubricants and cleaning materials applicable to the course content.
We have a huge fleet of bicycles, partial bicycles, “exploded” components and wheels devoted solely to use in the classroom. Each workstation is equipped with specialised equipment selected and set up for the sole purpose of optimising your learning.
We encourage you to bring your own bike so that you can have a go at performing the maintenance tasks on it directly. Many bikes are different and having your own bike there will help you ask questions relating to your particular bike and learn to recognise its parts. However, it isn’t compulsory to bring your own bike as we have plenty of demonstration bikes available for you to practise on. Please also note that time is not available within this course framework to discuss all brands and component types, their specific tooling requirements, variations to servicing specifications and removal and replacement procedures. The theory and practical procedures for removal, replacement and servicing are very similar, however, between brands. We endeavour to provide you with the procedural outline for Sram and Shimano products (the two most common brands). Please be aware that alternative brands' product specifics are covered in detail within the Haynes manual (Bontrager and Campagnolo). This includes the identification of variations in tool requirements and procedural requirements with individual brands and models.
Approximately seventy percent of the program time is divided between demonstration and lecture, and thirty percent is hands-on work at your workstation.
Based on your performance and attendance, you will earn a certificate of completion.
